STARTING A YOUNG BIRDERS CLUB
Most young birders clubs were started by one or two passionate people with a determination to make things happen. Sometimes these founders are adults involved with an organization, other times they are parents of young birders, and other times they are young birders themselves. Regardless of the initiator, time and energy can make a young birders club grow into a thriving community.
As the founder of the Ohio Young Birders Club (OYBC), this country's first young birders club, Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO) receives many requests for information on how to start a young birders club. In fall of 2011, BSBO met with the education staff at Cornell Lab of Ornithology to discuss ways to reach more students and encourage more adults to start youth birding programs. The result was the Young Birders Network, a website packed full of information for young birders and adults interested in getting more young people connected with birds and birding. One of the features of the YBN is the Young Birders Club Toolkit, a guiding resource for starting a club in your local area.
The OYBC is a nature based program developed by the Black Swamp Bird Observatory in 2006 to encourage, educate, and empower our youth conservation leaders. The OYBC program has correlations to Ohio’s Learning Standards in Science, Math, Social Studies, and English Language Arts. Ohio’s Learning Standards can be accessed online https://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Learning-in-Ohio
Please contact BSBO's Education Department at info@ohioyoungbirders for Ohio Learning Standards Statements and with any additional questions.
