Black Swamp Bird Observatory Presents...
The Ohio Young Birders Club Big Day Event

Saturday, October 10, 2020

The OYBC Big Day will be a united effort to celebrate birding from our local regions, tallying as many species as possible. We may not be able to be together, but we can still go birding alongside each other, virtually!

What's a "Big Day"?
During a BIG DAY, participants visit multiple locations to maximize the number of species that can be seen in a single calendar day. Like a walkathon, people can donate to the OYBC by pledging an amount for every species seen during the event. Everyone is welcome to join us and help count birds!

Show Your Support For Nature Education
100% of the proceeds will help educate young people about birds, the joy of birding, and the importance of being good stewards of natural resources!

Contributions Are Tax-Deductible
BSBO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so your donations are tax-deductible.

Guidelines
Keeping the safety of all OYBC members and their families is our number one priority, we ask for strict adherence to the Ohio Department of Health Covid-19 guidelines.

Teams: Each OYBC Chapter will virtually host a team composed of OYBC chapter members and advisors that wish to participate. Team members will connect with OYBC Advisors via WhatsApp. (Please see "Reporting birds to your OYBC Chapter Team" below.)

Playing Field: Birding can include one or multiple hot spots as long as social distance protocols can be met and as approved by the OYBC member’s parent/guardian.

Time Frame: You may participate for the entirety or a portion of the event as your schedule allows. eBird lists must be submitted by 12:00 midnight to be included in the chapter and cumulative totals.

List Keeping: eBird.org
We encourage all participants to submit bird sightings on eBird, in accordance with eBird protocol. Entering your sightings in eBird helps in the global citizen science effort while maintaining your personal list and will be available for scientific needs in the future.

Unfamiliar with using eBird? Check out these tools!

How to share your eBird checklists:
  • Step-by-step PDF instructions for how to download your eBird checklists to submit your Big Day total (Printable PDF)
  • Sharing eBird Checklists

Reporting birds to your OYBC Chapter Team: Each team will have one primary OYBC Chapter Advisor to facilitate easy communications about sightings, locations, and general questions on the day of the event. We have created a WhatsApp group for each OYBC chapter. Each participating chapter member and advisor will receive an email with a WhatsApp link for the iOS and Google Play app stores. Simply download WhatsApp then click the invitation link in the email for your specific chapter group. Once you have linked to the WhatsApp chapter group you can communicate with each other and check-in on the day’s observations with ease. Please do not message using the WhatsApp app prior to 7:00 AM on the count day.

The Ohio EPA's Ohio Environmental Education Fund (OEEF) awarded Black Swamp Bird Observatory full funding of $35,000 for our Ohio Young Birders Club expansion.

The OEEF grant fund will enable BSBO to achieve measurable objectives that support the overall goal of expanding and enhancing the OYBC, building a brighter future for bird conservation.
