Ohio Young Birders Club
Overnight Campout at Prairie Rose Farm

July 26 & 27, 2008
Sponsored by Prairie Rose Farm
Our hosts, Donna & Tim Daniel

We had an outrageously fun-filled overnight campout at a private nature preserve near Marysville, Ohio. Our hosts and property owners, Donna and Tim Daniel were very gracious. The Young Birders' activities included a scavenger hunt, a photography workshop, black-lighting and baiting for moths, stream studies, and bat studies.

We started our two day adventure with a hayride to see the entire property. A Gray Catbird taking a bath.

We saw all sorts of insects. Here is a cicada next to its exoskeleton.

And we saw over 20 species of butterflies,
here is a Question Mark...
...and a Pipevine Swallowtail.

We came a cross a few dragonflies, here is an Eastern Amberwing... ...and a Common Whitetail.

Here we are checking out... ...this Meadow Vole.

Before dinner we did stop to set up camp.

We found a Leopard Frog. We heard and saw Eastern Bluebirds,

a lot of House Wrens, and... ...this handsome Indigo Bunting

We cooked dinner over a campfire... ...and checked out the fruit station
looking for moths.

We spent a few minutes with the chickens
then at dusk watched...
...the Little and Big Brown Bats leaving
their attic roost in the barn.

Before dark Kenn had painted the sides of trees with this fermented banana liquid... ...which later we found was successful in attracting all sorts of moths!

On Sunday morning Kenn led us in search of breeding birds on the property.

We recapped all the neat stuff we saw at the end of our stay.
Thank you Donna and Tim for a wonderful weekend campout!
