We had an
outrageously fun-filled overnight
campout at a private nature preserve
near Marysville, Ohio. Our hosts and
property owners, Donna and Tim Daniel
were very gracious. The Young Birders'
activities included a scavenger hunt, a
photography workshop, black-lighting and
baiting for moths, stream studies, and
bat studies. |
We started
our two day adventure with a hayride to
see the entire property. |
A Gray
Catbird taking a bath. |
We saw all
sorts of insects. |
Here is a
cicada next to its exoskeleton. |
And we saw
over 20 species of butterflies,
here is a Question Mark... |
...and a Pipevine Swallowtail. |
We came a
cross a few dragonflies, here is an
Eastern Amberwing... |
...and a
Common Whitetail. |
Here we
are checking out... |
...this
Meadow Vole. |
Before
dinner we did stop to set up camp. |
We found a
Leopard Frog. |
We heard
and saw Eastern Bluebirds, |
a lot of
House Wrens, and... |
...this
handsome Indigo Bunting |
We cooked
dinner over a campfire... |
...and
checked out the fruit station
looking for moths. |
We spent a
few minutes with the chickens
then at dusk watched... |
...the Little
and Big Brown Bats leaving
their attic
roost in the barn. |
Before
dark Kenn had painted the sides of trees
with this fermented banana liquid... |
...which
later we found was successful in
attracting all sorts of moths! |
On Sunday
morning Kenn led us in search of
breeding birds on the property. |
We
recapped all the neat stuff we saw at
the end of our stay. |
Thank
you Donna and Tim for a wonderful
weekend campout! |
