Governor’s Residence and Heritage Garden BioBlitz
Saturday, August 28, 2010
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Bexley, Ohio
Former Ohio First Lady Hope Taft has invited the Ohio Young Birders Club to participate in the Governor’s Residence and Heritage Garden BioBlitz.
The idea of the Heritage Garden was first conceived in 2000 as a way to showcase Ohio's natural history and environment to the thousands of the yearly visitors to the Governor’s Residence.
More information on the garden can be found here.
Pictures of this extraordinary place can be seen on the OYBC Facebook page.
A BioBlitz is an effort to document all of the living things found in an area. A panel of diverse experts will be on hand, and the OYBC members can help collect unique natural history data for plants, invertebrate, herps, birds and more.
Please consider attending this exciting event. Early registration is absolutely required. Space is limited, so call the BSBO to sign up today.

Birding in Wayne and Holmes counties
Saturday, September 11, 2010
We're still working out the details for this field trip.
We'll probably meet at 9:00 a.m. at either Shreve Elementary School or Time & Optics Ltd
Map of the areas that we'll likely visit
Around 30 people attended this year's PRF field trip. This was our fourth annual trip to Prairie Rose Farm, and it just keeps getting better each year. Our sincere gratitude to Tim & Donna Marie Daniel for being such amazing hosts.
The Ohio Young Birders Club had an amazing weekend at Prairie Rose Farm. We watched four species of bats being banded, saw tons of birds and butterflies, black lighted and baited for moths, waded and seined in the creek. Best of all, we were able to cut the students loose for some unstructured time to just explore.

Sarah Winnicki will attend the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Young Birders Event. This exciting program helps teenagers to explore career possibilities and will include field trips, workshop on study skin preparation, sound recording, and field notes. The interaction with Cornell staff and the growing network of young birders from around the country adds to this exciting opportunity.
KBC Awards Scholarship to Wyatt Miller - April 2010
From the Kirtland Bird Club Web site: At the April 7, 2010 KBC monthly meeting, President Scott VanValkenburg presents 16 year old Wyatt Miller from Avon, a $250 scholarship to attend Camp Chiricahua. Camp Chiricahua presents young birders with an extraordinary opportunity to share a mutual love of birds and nature in one of the greatest natural history locations in North America. The scholarship is from the Tom LePage Scholarship Fund.
Congratulations for a job well done to Sarah Winnicki (age 16) and Wyatt Miller (age 16) for presenting Birding Basics 101 to over 30 adults and kids. They offered a lot of advice on optics, field guides, etc., and they both spoke passionately about their own personal experiences on how they got started in birding. Earlier in the day, we toured the Shreve area in the BSBO bus and birded Shreve Pond, Funk Bottoms, and Wright Marsh where we observed many species of waterfowl and a few species of shorebirds. Back at the school, we visited the vendor area and attended some excellent afternoon presentations. The Shreve Migration Sensation is always a good time.
