"Fledglings: Researching the Unknown"

Every passerine has been a fledgling. Why is it, then, that virtually nothing is known about this crucial stage of birds' lives? Visual and audio identification are both unknown areas, let alone behavior and development.

For the past two summers, Hope Batcheller has recorded fledglings in northern New England. In this talk, she will share audio recordings of fledglings, stories and photos from the field, the research process, and implications of all this for Breeding Bird Atlas projects.

Hope Batcheller, age 16, lives in rural Petersburgh, New York. Though interested in birds her whole life, finding an Ovenbird nest at age 8 fired an obsession. Breeding behavior and nest-finding have always fascinated Hope, and taking the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's "Homestudy Course in Bird Biology" sparked her interest in vocalizations.
